The Southern Rhone, Provence, and Corsica

The Southern Rhone, Provence, and Corsica

The Southern Rhone valley, a warmer counterpart to its northern neighbor, is a treasure trove of rich and satisfying wines, particularly in red. It stretches from just south of St Peray down to the Costieres de Nimes southwest of Orange. Here we find a wonderful art of blending several varieties (up to 13 different ones!) for their component strengths. That being said, Grenache with its heady raspberry liqueur like quality and spices is king. The more celebrated villages of the Southern Rhone: Chateauneuf du Pape, Rasteau, Cairanne, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Tavel. Also included here is Provence, whose roses may be the best in the world......it's greatest village is Bandol. AND the wild, rugged landscape of Corsica and its indigenous varieties is included in this category.
